Multi-site cuts risks and makes 42.5% efficiency gain

Industry: Transport

An organisation has seen a 42.5% water saving, on average daily use at a location, in a data enhancement and 17-site water audit and water efficiency programme with Water Plus.

The close customer work’s also seen other benefits for the multi-site – and the hundreds of thousands of people that use its locations each year.

“It’s fantastic to support the customer with a smart water management strategy which contributes towards their sustainability goal of reducing overall water use in its operation.

“This customer has found it easier to manage their water use, water data and portfolio of sites. That’s due to having additional information on meter locations and their water pipes, alongside access to an online analysis portal they can utilise to monitor and manage usage, which they’re doing multiple times a week.

“The water savings identified - and those being delivered - are a great contribution to its target, with further efficiency work at their sites ahead.”

Rosie Watkins, in the Advanced Services team at Water Plus.

The challenge

With a vast portfolio of sites across various counties, the multi-site needed an experienced and results-driven water partner to help reduce risks across their operation, while finding additional efficiency opportunities.

The organisation – one of the largest in its sector - also had water-saving targets to meet, as part of its sustainability goals.

The Solution

Water Plus designed a tailored approach, analysing the daily water data and delivering water audits at 17 locations to identify sites where the biggest impact and progress on the sustainability target could be made.

The customer partnership has also seen 17 data loggers installed to help track and monitor water use.

One data logger spotted 8,000 litres (8m3) an hour of extra water use at a location, prompting site checks. This could have cost more than £210,000 in wholesaler charges, for estimated water use in 12 months, and generate 24.7 tonnes of CO2e in a year, without action.

The multi-site customer also took up a leak detection visit, through Water Plus, to help identify the area of the increased water use - with additional action seeing the extra use drop from 8,000 litres an hour to around 400 litres an hour, at night, in 2026.

A Water Plus Key Account Manager also worked closely with the customer to develop the activity that would help their goals and reduce risks for the organisation.

The Results

42.5% water saving

On average daily use at a location, tracked by a data logger at one of the sites.

Devices cut 8,060 litres in daily use at the site – enough to fill 32,240 teacups, holding 250ml each, a day. Saving tracked in 2025.

Efficiency gain

120+ water efficiency devices installed across 4 sites, in 2025. Devices are cutting carbon emissions - and reducing energy use too, as less hot water's needed.

The installation of the water-savers was also included in the organisation’s report on social value, to highlight the positive steps the organisation is taking.

Risk reduction

Network mapping completed at 14 locations, to trace pipework in 2026, after 2 sites had network mapping in 2025. It’s giving more detail to tackle site water issues faster, if needed.

The site visits for the work has helped the organisation to understand where water pipework was located on site and has helped to update existing records.

The extra detail also helps to explore how to further strengthen resilience at the sites and limit risks, which also supports the organisation’s actions on how overall water use can be decreased.

Customer experience enhancements

Additional improvements for the organisation’s customers: Detailed audit on wastewater systems at a site also identified areas to reduce odours and improve efficiencies.
