Thousands of locations are benefiting from taking-up small actions that save water and find inefficiencies that add to running costs.
It’s building on work that saw 3,609 water-saving visits delivered at businesses, care homes, sports clubs and council sites in collaborative at-scale activity.
The Challenge
Unlocking Water-Saving opportunities across sites
Many sites keen to save water aren’t sure where to start – and where opportunities may be.
With water scarcity risks in the UK, without collective action, the approach combined awareness and education, with small changes to reduce water use and costs.
Finding smarter ways to use water can not only lower costs it can also cut carbon emissions. And where less hot water’s needed it can lower energy costs too.
Luke Brewer-Nevitt, Water efficiency Delivery Manager at United Utilities, added: “Finding more ways to save water not only lowers running costs it also reduces pressure on supplies and the environment, helping keeping water flowing for everyone.”
The solution
Turning insight into action
Insight and data were used to identify sites that could see the biggest benefits, including the education and healthcare sectors.
Water Plus contacted and engaged customer sites, in its Be Wise On Water awareness raising approach - to increase water-saving and reduce impacts on the environment.
Each site taking part received a free water audit and water-saving kit installed on taps, with any smaller leaks found being isolated, or repaired.
Audits to identify areas for savings, installing water-saving kit and leak repairs were funded by the regional wholesaler United Utilities.
The results
Over 1 million litres saved daily
Expected overall daily saving for the collaborative project, so far, would be enough to fill a whopping 4.1 million cups of tea a day, with each holding 250ml. Overall this would also save £21,754, in wholesaler charges in just 5 days.*
* The saving is based on 1,031,081 litres of water saved a day (1,031 cubic metres of water a day). £21,754 saving in 5 days based on wholesaler water and wastewater charge of £4.22 per 1,000 litres of water from 25/26 FY wholesaler charges (measured as 1 cubic metre of water/1m3).
