Partnership power fuels growth in Girls' and Women’s Football league

Lates news

Opportunities to play more sport, develop skills and grow confidence are increasing, while building healthier lifestyles, in a girls and ladies league partnership with Water Plus.

The collaboration, which began in August 2024, has seen a major milestone marked in the team-up, for grassroot sport, with support meaning more matches can be played. The teamwork is just one way we're working with a huge range of organisations to create significant positive impacts for local communities, while helping more customers save water.

Empowering the Next Generation of players

Our partnership has directly contributed to the rapid growth of grassroots football in Staffordshire. We have funded 10 referee courses, additional coaching qualifications, and over 40 new team kits.

This support has enabled the league to expand significantly, with the number of teams growing for the 2025/26 season and the number of teams in the 2025 summer tournament doubling compared to the previous year. The league now proudly involves more than 300 teams.

“The biggest value from our partnership has been attracting more people to get involved in the league, with additional coaching qualifications leading to more girls and ladies taking up the sport – and more than 300 teams for the 25/26 season.” – Aidan Reid, SGLFL Vice Chair

Community engagement and water-saving initiatives

Beyond financial support, we have actively engaged with the league's community. In May 2025, employees from our main office in Stoke-on-Trent volunteered at the flagship Cup Finals event, which saw over 200 young players and 2,000 spectators. Our volunteers helped with trophy presentations and managing ticket entries.

The partnership also includes education and awareness-raising, highlighting simple water-saving actions and easy and essential regular checks that sports clubs and communities can take to reduce costs, save energy and contribute to a more sustainable future.

“Our partnership is really helping the development and growth of grassroots football, powering pathways for developing the sportspeople of the future and delivering positive change for young people’s health and skills-building.” – Aidan Reid, SGLFL Vice Chair

A winning formula for success

From water-saving initiatives to supporting young people’s health and skills, we’re helping shape a more sustainable and empowered future. And the league partnership is just one of a range of additional positive actions we're taking for communities and customers, which have also been recognised with a 2025 UK Customer Satisfaction Award for Sustainable Customer Service.
We're proud to be making such a positive impact.

“We’re seeing the confidence and skills of girls’ teams and in our ladies' teams continuing to grow.
Thanks Water Plus, you’re making a big positive difference for girls and women!”
Joanne Waldron, Co-Chair of Staffordshire Girls and Ladies Football League

Finalists in the UK Employee Experience Awards 2025, we are also a part of a Careers Hub and a Careers Enterprise Programme. This involves delivering CV workshops and hosting hundreds of pupils at our main office each year, to give insights into workplaces and encourage people into future careers.
