Charity support and reducing carbon

New chapter in community support

We started a major new charity partnership with Teenage Cancer Trust, under the additional steps Water Plus is taking to support communities and drive positive impacts. It's seen more than 400 Youth Support Co-ordinator hours supported, already.

Net Zero Carbon Footprint Standard

First water retailer to have a science-based target aligned Net Zero target and we're a CO2e Assessed Organisation. We've worked with Carbon Footprint in 2026, 2025 and 2024 on a reduction pathway, aligned to 1.5C, alongside action plans to continually improve and gain further carbon data.

To make water-saving actions and greener steps easier and support moves towards significant reductions in greenhouse gases, we’re also exploring emerging technology and tools to drive further progress.

Water Plus has had its Net Zero targets validated by the globally recognised Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), becoming the first water retailer to gain this.

The SBTi validated targets for Water Plus cover the below commitments to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions:

In the near term, to reduce absolute Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, by 25.3%, by financial year 2030, from a financial year 2024/2025 base year.

Within this target, Water Plus commits to reduce scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions by 42% and Scope 3 GHG emissions by 25% by the 2030 financial year.
And to reduce absolute Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, by 90%, by financial year 2040, from a financial year 2024/2025 base year.

So far, we have also:

Large-scale water efficiencies delivered

Engaged thousands of sites to cut costs and carbon in large-scale water-saving projects in 2026 and 2025. Water Plus insight and approach led to more than 8,200 water-saving visits between July 2024 and March 2026.

Earlier at-scale water savings, in 2023, set a blueprint for the industry's approach. We're also engaging hospital, universities and council staff, along with manufacturing workforces with science-based targets.

Installed hundreds of data loggers

To drive forward efficiencies and progress on science-based sustainability targets for multi-sites, hundreds of data loggers were installed between 2025 and 2026.

This includes 100 data loggers installed in 2025 for an organisation which has an SBTi validated Net Zero target, with more being added to its sites in 2026.

And we installed efficiency devices that cut water use by 42.5%, in 2025 - all tracked by a data logger on a water meter.

Peatland and seagrass restoration

Supporting SDGs and the ecosystem with 35 seagrass meadows supported, near UK coastlines in 2025, equal to 350 square metres of sealife habitats.

Around 780 square metres of peatland restoration funded, in 2025, in Scotland, helping biodiversity - after supporting peatland restoration in 2024 and in 2021, to prevent more than 400 tonnes of greenhouse gases being released in the UK.

Verified under the Peatland Code which is accredited by UKAS to ISO 14064/5.

Extra trees for UK communities

We started a partnership with Trees for Cities in 2022, which runs to 2026, increasing green canopies for communities. It's seen more than 1,100 extra native UK trees.

The tree planting has helped projects engage more than 2,000 volunteers, including primary schools, community groups and youth organisations.

By funding the tree-planting and empowering communities to look after green spaces in the UK, the partnership also supports Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3, 11, 12, 13, 15 and 17.

Electric Vehicles and recycling take-up

From 2023, changes at work increased employee EV and cycling take-up, after launching Electric Vehicle and Cycle to Work schemes to encourage greener transport use.

Our main office site has recycling points throughout, plus we've regular communications with all our employees on reducing environmental impacts, to name just a few actions we're taking.

Partnerships to cut Carbon Footprints

In bold actions to help more businesses and the public sector track carbon reductions and increase positive social value impacts, we partnered with Zellar, an online sustainability tool.

It's helping manufacturers, schools, care homes and others track and cut their carbon and reduce energy costs. It also shows them steps to reduce carbon emissions, including an online water-saver site checker and highlights volunteering options.
